Feathers & Feelings: Creating Cross-Generational Birding Sanctuaries at UCLA and CDU Communities

Project Description

|

Current

Feathers & Feelings (F&F) is building bird-friendly garden “sanctuaries” to foster emotional well-being and cross-generational connection. High school students and senior volunteers come together to observe birds, tend plants, and reflect on mood changes. Early milestones include installing fruit trees, raised planters, and AI bird cameras on UCLA’s Semel Institute B-Deck, securing IRB approval, and forming new partnerships with local schools and Charles R. Drew University. Fellows joining this project will support community-partnered neuroscience research through participatory wellness assessments, bilingual engagement activities, and community-driven “citizen neuroscience” that links bird observations with human mood and connection.
